Are you ready for carnival?

The last week of February and first week of March are always busy with the preparations for carnival. I was hoping to reuse any of the costumes from past years but it was impossible. There was no way I could fit my son in the cow-boy outfit he's been using during the last three years... far too small. And, of course, no way I could convince my daughter to use the nice mermaid dress that I made a year ago (and this one was still big enough).

Luckily there were quite a lot of ideas out there, in the blogging world. However, it only solved the problem partially.
My son was happy to put on a diver costume, inspired by this one. Two empty bottles of Coke, a couple of coats of yellow paint and a plastic tube made the diving tanks. His diving glasses added the final touch. This one was ready quickly. Great!

Then, the worst part started. Despite all my efforts to go for this funny bat costume, which seemed to be quite easy to make, I did not succeed. My daughter had her own requirements.
It had to be an animal. Well, a bat is an animal, isn't it? Yes! but it was not valid... So we started going through a long list and, therefore, a long negotiation.
She.- Leopard?
Me.- No, too complicated
She.- Dolphin?
Me.- what? even worse!
...
I did not count how many animals we reviewed... a lot!
Finally we came to an agreement and decided to go for the parrot. I tried to simplify it as much as I could and I think that it didn't go that bad. A beak made out of yellow foam, and colorful feathers sewn in an old t-shirt. That was all.
I am happy with the result and, most important, she is also happy!

Mission accomplished!! (till next year...)

La última semana de Febrero y la primera de Marzo siempre estamos liados con los preparativos para carnaval. Este año tenía la esperanza de poder usar algún disfraz de años anteriores pero ha sido imposible. Por un lado, no había manera de meter a mi hijo en el disfraz de vaquero que ha estado usando durante los últimos tres años... demasiado pequeño, me temo. Los niños crecen...Y, por supuesto, tampoco ha habido forma de convencer a mi hija para volver a usar el disfraz de sirena que le hice el año pasado, y éste sí que le servía. Con lo chulo que es y lo que me costó hacerlo...

Por suerte, encontré muchas ideas en los distintos blogs que visito. Aunque esto sólo resolvió el problema en parte.
Mi hijo se quedó muy contento con un disfraz de buzo, inspirado en éste que vi aquí. Dos botellas vacías de Coca-Cola, un par de capas de pintura amarilla, unas rayas negras hechas con cinta aislante y un tubo de plástico hacen las veces de depósitos de oxígeno. Sus gafas de bucear completan el conjunto. Más fácil imposible, estaba listo en muy poco tiempo!

Después vino la parte más complicada.
A pesar de todos mis esfuerzos para decantarnos por este disfraz tan gracioso de murciélago, que parecía además bastante fácil, no conseguí el visto bueno de mi hija. Y es que tenía sus propios requerimientos.
Tenía que ser un animal. Bueno, un murciélago es un animal, o no? Sí, pero.... no vale! Así que empezamos a repasar, y negociar, una lista interminable de animales.
Ella.- Leopardo?
Yo.- No, demasiado complicado
Ella.- Delfín?
Yo.- qué? cómo? incluso peor!
...
No he contado cuantas diferentes opciones hemos discutido, pero un montón, os lo puedo asegurar.
Al final, llegamos a un acuerdo, y nos decidimos por el papagayo. Para hacerme la vida más fácil lo he simplificado al máximo, y creo que ha quedado bastante resultón. Un pico hecho con foam amarillo y una camiseta vieja donde he cosido plumas de colores. Eso ha sido todo.
Yo estoy contenta con el resultado y, lo más importante, ella también!

Misión cumplida!! (hasta el próximo año...)
